Hard Lox 2017

Dear Kol Simcha,

I’m having trouble gushing about you enough. What you did for High Holidays was simply transcendent. Over and over again, you hit your technical marks (tone, tuning, togetherness) and then unlocked the magic (artistry and awe). Several times I had to stop singing because I either had the chills, or I was choked up.

Now we get to have a ton of fun singing at Hard Lox! Here’s the set list: Hard Lox 2017 Set List. It’s shorter than in years past.

*** Note: we have a special guest accompanist, who is bringing along a special guest instrumentalist. If you want to know who they are, see you there! ***

I’m not bringing your music, so if you’d like it, please arrange to bring it. (You know me, I’d prefer if you didn’t – I’d rather have the audience see your eyes than have you get every note right. However, no worries if you’d like to hold it.)

What to wear: anything you want. Often we favor Hard Lox apparel, but it’s by no means a requirement. In general it’s good to dress in layers for Hard Lox, as the temperature tends to swing from quite cold to quite warm over the day.

Call is at 11:00 in front of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. We take the stage at 11:30, and hand it to Shir Tephila around 11:50.

Finally, there’s no rehearsal this week, as I’m in San Francisco on Weds. We’ll rely on our excellent preparation, doused with some adrenaline, to deliver a stellar performance once again!

Much love,
James

NO Choir rehearsal Sept 13. Only HHD ensemble.

Dear Kol Simcha,

As we agreed on Sunday, you are sounding strong and beautiful. To avoid “over-rehearsing” (that’s actually a thing, when choirs get bored and go on autopilot) and to give the ensemble chance to catch up, Vance and I would like you to have the night off! Rest up.

NOTE that the call time has changed for Selichot! We will meet at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary.

Tech rehearsal September 10, 2017

Dear Kol Simcha,

Yes, we will have rehearsal today, September 10, at 2 pm.

PLEASE NOTE that Karl Straus’s memorial service is at 1 pm in the sanctuary. Please be mindful so that we don’t interrupt the service by accident. Also note that parking may be tight. If the service runs long, we will wait quietly in Dave Hall until it’s over before moving into the sanctuary. If you’d like to attend the interment instead of rehearsal, please do.

No Kol Simcha rehearsal September 6, just Ensemble

Dear Kol Simcha,

Vance is so delighted by your progress, he’s giving you the week off! That’s right, no choir rehearsal this Wednesday Sept 6. The HHD Ensemble will still meet at 7 and rehearse their pieces, but unless you’re also in that, take a well-deserved rest.

Also, please see below from Steve Shulruff, and please continue sending your prayers of healing his way – they help!!

Love, James

Dear Kol Simcha,

I am writing to express my gratitude for your help at Mary’s funeral service. I was deeply moved by your willingness to sing at the service even though the Kol Simcha schedule is so incredibly busy these days. The singing was just beautiful. Eli, Eli was Mary’s favorite piece of liturgical music. She would have loved your rendition- I certainly did. Later as you all began singing the Spanish-Portuguese Oseh Shalom I started to break down since I knew we were nearing the end of the service. But slowly I found myself singing along (I actually remembered the bass part!) which really helped- it sure felt like we were all singing to her together. Thanks for everything- your understanding and support has been of great comfort to me over these past years. And I’m really looking forward to singing again with you all after the High Holidays.
L’Shalom,
Steve

This week

Dear Kol Simcha,

Thanks for a great retreat. We will be seeing a lot of each other this week. To recap:

  • Tuesday 2:00 pm. Meet at the Temple for Mary Shulruff’s memorial service. We will open the service with Eli Eli, and close it after Kaddish with the Spanish Portuguese Oseh Shalom. Those who choose are invited to the interment at Riverside, then back to the Temple for a reception. Appropriate dress would be a somber version of the choir attire: black, gray, perhaps some white.
  • Wednesday. Those who choose are invited to a minyan. Family will receive visitors on Wednesday,  August 16 beginning at 6:30pm with a minyan service at 7pm. Shulruff residence is at 5 Mayfield Road, Asheville, N.C. 28804. Choir rehearsal will begin at 7:45 pm at the Temple.
  • Friday. Meet at 6:00 if possible at the Temple to warm up for leading services. Here’s the cue sheet for Friday night: DRAFT Cue Sheet 2017-08-18

Thanks for all you give to our community. They appreciate it greatly!

Much love,

James

Dear Kol Simcha,

We’re going to have so much fun at the retreat tomorrow (Sunday August 13, 2017)! You don’t have to tell me if/when you’ll be there – we’ll just be happy to have you for as much as you can make of it. Here are some logistics.

Lunch potluck guidelines

Please bring something to share – it can be a main course, a salad, snacks, dessert, or drinks. Please be “kosher-style”, meaning no shellfish or pork, and don’t mix milk & meat in the same dish. I’ll bring some bagels & cream cheese for the morning.

Rehearsal schedule

Dear Kol Simcha,

Hi all – thanks for bearing with me and Vance as we continue to take advantage of Vance’s generous offer to help me out this summer while I focus on business things. Here’s the simple rule of thumb:

Plan to meet every Wednesday at 7:00 from now though the High Holidays.

In many cases, Kol Simcha will rehearse for less than an hour then can go home. Then the High Holiday ensemble will spend another hour or so by themselves. Vance reserves the right to change this depending on progress, but we will communicate in email and on the website if anything changes.

Remember, our retreat is a week from today: 8/13. If you have a conflict, just do whatever makes most sense to you – we’ll be happy to see you whenever you can make it.

Much love,

James
