Hard Lox 2017

Dear Kol Simcha,

I’m having trouble gushing about you enough. What you did for High Holidays was simply transcendent. Over and over again, you hit your technical marks (tone, tuning, togetherness) and then unlocked the magic (artistry and awe). Several times I had to stop singing because I either had the chills, or I was choked up.

Now we get to have a ton of fun singing at Hard Lox! Here’s the set list: Hard Lox 2017 Set List. It’s shorter than in years past.

*** Note: we have a special guest accompanist, who is bringing along a special guest instrumentalist. If you want to know who they are, see you there! ***

I’m not bringing your music, so if you’d like it, please arrange to bring it. (You know me, I’d prefer if you didn’t – I’d rather have the audience see your eyes than have you get every note right. However, no worries if you’d like to hold it.)

What to wear: anything you want. Often we favor Hard Lox apparel, but it’s by no means a requirement. In general it’s good to dress in layers for Hard Lox, as the temperature tends to swing from quite cold to quite warm over the day.

Call is at 11:00 in front of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. We take the stage at 11:30, and hand it to Shir Tephila around 11:50.

Finally, there’s no rehearsal this week, as I’m in San Francisco on Weds. We’ll rely on our excellent preparation, doused with some adrenaline, to deliver a stellar performance once again!

Much love,
James

Dear Kol Simcha,

As we agreed on Sunday, you are sounding strong and beautiful. To avoid “over-rehearsing” (that’s actually a thing, when choirs get bored and go on autopilot) and to give the ensemble chance to catch up, Vance and I would like you to have the night off! Rest up.

NOTE that the call time has changed for Selichot! We will meet at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary.

Here are the cue sheets for Selichot and Rosh Hashanah:

Yom Kippur tech rehearsal and service logistics

Dear Kol Simcha,

Hope to see you tonight for our tech rehearsal for YK! We have a ton of stuff to do, so thanks in advance for your focus.

Remember tech rehearsal will be 6-8:30 PM!!! Sorry for the late-ish night, but schedules were tough to coordinate for this one. And since the presidential debate organizers rudely didn’t check with me before scheduling the 2nd debate, we’ll end earlier than planned so people can get home in time.

Kol Nidre call is 6 pm Tuesday. A few reminders for the service:

  • Dress is all white if you want to or are able to, though black & white is fine. I myself will wear a black suit and white shirt.
  • Please don’t wear perfume or cologne as it can trigger allergies in others.
  • Drink plenty of water beforehand, but we won’t bring water into the sanctuary on YK, and it’s best not to eat or drink in the Temple at all excepting for health requirements.

Here are the final cue sheets:

Dear Kol Simcha,

Looking forward to singing with you tonight, tomorrow, and the next day! High Holidays will be even more meaningful and beautiful this year due to your voices of joy.

Rehearsal agenda June 15, 2016

Dear Kol Simcha,

Rabbi has offered us an incredible opportunity for the June 24th services! She’s invited us to lead a “Shabbat service in song- with explanations about the composers and music along the way. Now that the Jewish music class just completed… why not a tour through different composers and music styles for the service?”

Rabbi’s idea is: “Before each piece as they come, choir members might like to put together and read a short paragraph about the composer (when lived, what kind of music composed, career…etc) and perhaps what stands out to them about the piece. (2-3 minutes max!)”

She has done much of the research for us already:
  1. Jane Pitt might want to intro the Rossi Barechu
  2. Eric Mandell (Ahavat Olam) http://articles.philly.com/1988-02-08/news/26244095_1_jewish-music-music-department-music-school
  3. Sulzer (Shema) http://zamir.org/wp-content/notes/pdfs/2000/2000a3.pdf
  4. Debbie Friedman (And You Shall Love) http://www.debbiefriedman.com/about-debbie/
  5. Intro Freed (specifically this Mi Chamocha- which was part of a Hassidic Shabbat service he composed- revolutionary to reform movement of 50s)  http://www.milkenarchive.org/works/view/342
  6. Helfman  (Hashkiveinu) http://www.milkenarchive.org/people/works/all/514/Max+Helfman#/people/view/all/514/Max+Helfman/full
  7. Isaacson (Sim Shalom)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Isaacson
  8. Janowski (May the Words) http://www.milkenarchive.org/people/view/all/524/Janowski,+Max

At rehearsal, we’ll talk through this and see who wants to volunteer for what.
